James Cochran MD, DABU, FRSC
Dr. James Cochran is a board-certified urologist with 45 years of clinical and research experience in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. He co-founded the Urology Clinics of North Texas, the largest independent urology practice in the Metroplex, where he also served as the Chief Medical Officer in charge of FDA clinical trials. Dr Cochran received his residency training at UT Southwestern where he was a part of many innovative projects. With an avid interest in clinical research, Dr Cochran pioneered a seminal study for tumor markers in men with testicular cancer which was awarded the National First Prize for Clinical Research and Studies by the American Urology Association in 1975. His work remains the standard of care today. Throughout his career, Dr Cochran has served in many capacities, including Chief of Staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas (PHD), Chief of Urology at PHD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Urology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and as the President of the Local Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Professionally, Dr. Cochran has always been able to identify innovative technologies in Urology and has been an early adopter to introduce these to DFW urologic community. He was the first urologist in the Metroplex to perform many of the procedures that are now considered the standard of care: including percutaneous nephrostolithotomy, shockwave lithotripsy, microsurgical vasectomy reversal, nerve sparing radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic nephrectomy and most recently focused ultrasound ablation of prostate tissue. When high-intensity focused ultrasound technology for prostate became clinically available, Dr. Cochran foresaw a paradigm shift coming in the management of prostate cancer and became a trained user of the Sonablate transrectal HIFU system. He was designated as a Principal Investigator for one of the trials that led to the FDA clearance for HIFU and is a certified Proctor for the technology. He has been offering HIFU to patients across Texas and beyond for many years, treating hundreds of satisfied patients. He has also trained numerous urologists on the delivery of HIFU. In 2020, Dr. Cochran became aware of the TULSA Procedure, and was trained in the technology. He met Dr. Rajiv Chopra, and they co-founded Texas Prostate to offer these technologies to men in a comfortable and personalized setting.
Beyond his professional credentials, Dr. Cochran is himself a prostate cancer survivor, having undergone a radical prostatectomy to treat his disease 26 years ago. Through this experience he has first-hand knowledge and understanding of the impact of a prostate cancer diagnosis on a man and his family.
Dr. Cochran is also a man of faith, and he guides his professional and personal life decisions with this moral compass. He welcomes patients from all backgrounds to his practice.
